Join us Saturday June 13th a las 8pm for a powerful noche of film and poetry as the San Francisco Flor y Canto International Literary Festival presents a screening of UN TRIP: raúlrsalinas and the Poetry of Liberation, a film by Anne Lewis and Laura Varela, and the amazing new documentary about Alejandro Murguia, KEEPER OF THE FIRE, directed by David L. Brown and Lou Dematteis.
UN TRIP is a split-screen jazz and liberation documentary based on “Un Trip through the Mind Jail,” written in 1969 by the beloved Xicanindio poet raúlrsalinas while he was incarcerated at Leavenworth Federal Penitentiary.
UN TRIP is a story of transformation through political education in community (initially a community of the incarcerated). The specifics create a model of relationship once outside as well as inside the walls. The story is told by raúlrsalinas who spent most of his adolescent and young adult life inside as a petty criminal and drug dealer. He came out of the Federal penitentiaries a deep and strong social advocate and community organizer. He never went back to prison. The film explores contemporary issues: imprisonment, community destruction, gentrification, and the profound impact of cultural memory on sanity and salvation.Through the life and work of activist, author, and poet Alejandro Murguia, KEEPER OF THE FIRE explores the roles activist writers and poets play in the fight for a more just and equitable world. Following in the footsteps of the Beat poets and inspired by the rich tradition of Spanish and Latin American literature, Murguia passionately confronts many of the urgent issues of the day with his work and his words. The film follows him on Lyrical journeys from Nicaragua and Mexico City to Washington, D.C., from the barrios of East Los Angeles to San Francisco’s North Beach and Mission Districts. In the midst of all this, he wins two American Book Awards and serves as the first Latino Poet Laureate of San Francisco.
We are truly blessed to have the directors Laura Varela and Lou Dematteis, as well as Alejandro Murguia, in attendance for this very special evening.
