Beyond Baroque is will host the L.A. screening of Un Trip: raúlrsalinas and the Poetry of Liberation (25 min), directed by Anne Lewis and Laura Varela(@varelafilm). This documentary is a split-screen jazz and liberation documentary based on “Un Trip through the Mind Jail”—written in 1969 by the beloved Xicanindio poet Raúl R. Salinas while incarcerated at Leavenworth Federal Penitentiary.
The film examines transformation through political education in community (initially among the incarcerated) and expands to address contemporary issues such as imprisonment, community destruction, gentrification, and the profound role of cultural memory in survival and liberation.
Beyond Baroque is hosting a screening followed by a moderated conversation with the filmmakers of @untripdocumentary and a flor y canto reading with poets and contemporaries influenced by raúl’s writings.
Stay tuned for more details! Tickets will be available soon. For more info on the documentary, visit raulrsalinasdocumentary.com.
